Builders have used half hull models to shape their ideas into full sized boats for hundreds of years. It wasn't until the concept of a naval architect came into being that drawings became a means of conveying these shapes to three dimensions. Still there were many well-known builders who never could read a drawing, but worked exclusively from half hull models.
