GECO INDUSTRIES

The General Engineering Company of Ontario (GECO) was a munitions plant located in Scarborough, Toronto, and owned by the Government of Canada. Between July 1941 to July 1945, GECO filled more than 256 million units of ammunition for the Government of Canada. The site spanned 345 acres and consisted of 172 buildings, including various facilities for handling explosives and safe areas. During World War II, a large percentage of GECO employees were women, earning nicknames like "Bomb Girl" and "Munitions Gal." The company also had recreational and support services for employees, as well as notable visitors like Mary Pickford and Andrew McNaughton. After the war, some buildings were used for emergency housing, and a portion of the site is now part of the Golden Mile in Scarborough.
